First Semester at Loyola by James Zhang

Life at Loyola
I went to classes every morning from Monday to Friday. Also, I went to Culture class in the afternoon on Monday and Wednesday. I always played basketball for one hour and ran in the gym for half an hour from Monday to Friday. After dinner, I always did homework and watched NBA basketball games on TV. I watched all the Saints games this season. I hope Saints will win the champion this year. Sometimes, I played Frisbee on the quad with my American friends. By talking with each other, I learned English quickly. I joined the cutting pumpkin activity with my friend whose name is Kevin Abanilla. We cut the pumpkin which was the best of all the pumpkins and it was showed on the first page of Maroon News paper. Sometimes, I cooked in the kitchen of 12th floor. My Chinese and American friends liked eating.

Studying with LIEP
I studied hard and tried my best to study in the first semester. I believe I am the best in the LIEP program. My Writing and Reading professor is Miss Greenstone who helped me to improve a lot on the Writing and Reading. My Listening, Speaking and Grammar professor is Erika who made me could talked with American people. My Culture professor is Jess who like Saints, the same as me. We always talked about the Saints game after the game was finished. Also, because of her, I knew a lot of culture of New Orleans and the United States. Although I studied in the LIEP program just four months, I learned too much useful things that I never learned in China. We went to downtown, Audubon Park and Audubon zoo to know the life of New Orleans. Also, we held a Swing Dance on Thursday. We had a lot of fun during the activities. Also, I learned a lot and improved my English. I like all the subjects and professors. Because of them, I had a well beginning, I believe I'll have a excellent life and studying time in Loyola.

Living the Big Easy
New Orleans is a nice city. Most of the people are very friendly. I like the weather, the food, Loyola University, and the sports. All the things in New Orleans are very good, but except the transportation. The weather is similar in my hometown. I like the benyas best, I like sweet food and my hometown food is sweet too. My Chinese professor Lee and Fok helped us a lot. The professors and the students in Loyola are very friendly. I like the Hornets and the Saints. Chris Paul is one of the best players in NBA. I went to the Hornets game twice. The first time, the Hornets played against Miami Heat. The Hornets won the game finally. It was an amazing game. I was my favorite basketball player, Lebron James. Also, I saw other super stars, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. The second time, the Hornets played against Spurs. Although the Hornet lost the game, it still was an wonderful game. Drew Brees is one of the best players in NFL. Also, the Saints is the best team in the world. I saw the Saints game at thanksgiving holiday. The Saints won the game at the end of three minutes. it was a really amazing and unbelievable game. I didn't like the transportation in New Orleans. The public transportation is so bad in New Orleans. Also, the road is narrowly and out of flatness.

Out and About
I got the Driver's License in October and I ordered a Porsche Cayenne. I'll have it at the middle of February. I like the car and I'll go outside easily. Also, my English improved a lot because of my professors, my friends and myself. I traveled in Houston a month ago. The Houston is the fourth biggest city in the United States. I went to the NASA, it's a very excellent place to travel. I was surprised and amazed by the rockets and the police cars. Also, I went to the Rockets game. This was my first time to go to watch the NBA game. Before, I just watched the NBA games on TV and the Internet. This was the second time to see Yao Ming. I was so happy to see Carmelo Anthony and other NBA players. My favorite place in Houston is Chinatown. We ate a lot of Chinese food and bought a lot of Chinese food.

The Future
I'll go to Chicago on December 16th. I'll come back to New Orleans on January third. I'm looking forward to see Mary's family. It's my first time to celebrate the Christmas in the United States. I hope it will be fun. I want to watch the Chicago Bulls game. I want to see Derrick Rose. I really hope I can go to the PILOT program. I want to go the Loyola classes. I can learn other subjects and English. I think it's much useful for me. My professors encouraged me to continue study hard. It was absolutely right. I'll try my best to study in Chicago. I can adapt the life in the United States. I'll get my car at the middle of February. I'll have more ways to talk with American people.
